Your selected question and answer

Question:

How will the recent volcanic ash incident affect my travel plans?

Answer:

If you currently do not have travel insurance
Travel insurance policies bought on or after 23rd May 2011 will not provide cover for any claim arising from the current volcanic ash issue. This is due to the incident being a known event at time of purchasing the policy.

If you have Tesco Travel Insurance and are affected by the incident:

If your flight from the UK is delayed for more than 12 hours due to the volcanic ash incident
In the first instance, you should contact your airline/tour operator/travel agent for reimbursement or replacement flight.

If your airline provides you with alternative flight or a refund, but you have unused accommodation that you cannot cancel, a claim will be considered for any irrecoverable travel and accomodation costs. You are also able to claim for cancellation of your travel if your airline/tour operator/travel agent is not able to reimburse you. In all cases, evidence will be required.

If you're stranded abroad and cannot return home due to the volcanic ash incident
You should contact your airline/tour operator/travel agent in the first instance.

If your airline/tour operator /travel agent is unable to assist, we may assist with reasonable evidenced costs for customers stranded. Before making accommodation arrangements, you should contact us first to discuss your plans. You must retain receipts/evidence of costs incurred.

If your departure flight from the UK is delayed but you still want to travel on a rescheduled flight
If you have checked in at the airport and your departure is delayed, you are covered under the terms and conditions of your policy. Your policy booklet will confirm what level of cover applies to your policy/

If after the first 12 hours of delay, you decide to abandon the trip before departure, you can claim for abandonment costs as per the terms and conditions of your policy.

If you're abroad and want to try and return home via a different route than planned
You should speak to your airline in the first instance to find out when your flight is likely to be rescheduled for.

Before embarking on any alternative route, you must contact us to discuss your proposed plans.
